The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony, I mean they even got the writing credits for the song which Richard Ashcroft wrote. All because of a sample. It was a long time ago but I always thought The Rolling Stones would be more about the music than just the money.Thanks ProfA., yea I love the movie.I agree, I love The Science of Sleep and others too, sucks he takes so long from film to film. Honestly, I think the man is a legend. Plus, his songs are so beautifully put together and fluid.
I feel terrible that the Rolling Stones took some of his zest, BUT he seemed to get it all back in 2005.
He wrote the lyrics to Bittersweet Symphony but he sample the instrumental part ... so what??? Artist do it everything day, especially in Hip Hop/ Rap. So why did he get punished so sufferly?
I don't give a damn about what the critics and what the Rolling Stones have to say about him, he is the best male singer I've ever heard and the song "Bittersweet Symphony" is one of the greatest songs ever written.

I have heard the song before but never knew what orchestra plays the song. I recently came across Bittersweet Symphony and it's really similar to the background beat for that song. I did some research and found out all the legal matters with The Stones and the Andrew Oldham Orchestra. Wikipedia has samples of both songs and neither are what im looking for. I also came across a forum where somebody stated the song is a ripoff from a classical song, so that supports my thought that there is a song out there that sounds similar. theres also a techno remix with the same beat, a friend gave it to me and it was titled Water Rave but i doubt it's the actual song name. anyways, please help me if you know what im talking about.that techno song is actually called techno Water Rave by Trance Control, listen to it after about 2 1/2 mins into the song.Thank you for the people who answered so far. I already know the about the legal battles and the story behind Bittersweet and the Last time. if your answer has anything to do with the history of those two bands/songs please dont aswer, since its not a new answer. thank you very very much. now go listen to Techno water rave about 2.5 mins into the song, and let me know if anyone recognizes the beat, its a more upbeat tune than the two previously mentioned songs.I keep finding more clues but no answer. here is the latest. the song was played during comercials for John London's radio show which used to be on the line up for 106.9 Free FM in the San Francisco bay area. If any one listened to him, you would've heard the song.

It was out at the same time (in UK) as the Verves version and i belive it had some young girls voice in it. It was mainly based around the string section but i cant find any refernce to it on the internet. Did hear it a few months ago on scott mills Radio one wonder years but forgot to take note of the name. Does anybody know who did it?

First, unless you listen to a classical, country, or jazz station, you are going to hear the Stones- a LOT; and its the same songs- I must have heard Jumpin Jack Flash and Brown Sugas a gazillion times. Second, they are one of (if not the) biggest sell-out, commercial bands there are - not that they need the money. (Compare with Bruce Springsteen who was offered millions for his songs but declined). Third, they love the lawsuit whenever it regards any trace of their image or sound. I may be wrong on this, but I believe the band that did 'Bittersweet Symphony' was sued from them for having a sample of 'Last Time'? I dont know about you, but when Im in my 60s I dont think stuff like that would bother me unless it gets out of hand. And, yes, I still acknowledge them as one of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time- which is partly why I no longer listen to rock and roll! ;)
